to be made new in the
attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in
true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:23-24
The one pager, here, gives a list of possible activities for this particular verse.
Find the butterfly stained glass sample and instructions here. Find the butterfly sort to mail home for the kids here. Butterfly foot print sample and instructions are here.
This link, here, has some further worksheets available for class. The second and third pages have vocabulary cards for righteousness and holy. The children can decorate the cards or add them to a vocabulary folder you create in class. There is a homework coupon for each child to fill out and return to class for a special prize. The page with the bubble "New" on it is for children to write the verse around it. The next page is a sample of the worksheet. Finally, the last worksheet is a fill in the blank worksheet. Each child comes up with a verb they will do instead of sin, since they are to put on the new self, to be righteous and holy. They will draw themselves doing this instead of sinning.

The Edible Ten Plagues
This is one our all-time favorite lessons!!! I wish I could give credit to the creator of it, but I heard about it from Janell who heard about it from Susie, heard about it from... Even though it is SUPER fun (and a little gross!) we still want the kids to know that the reason we are doing it is to learn that...
Before and after eating each plague, we say the red poster together. I also made the ten plague numbers. They were in the workroom, so again, I cannot give proper credit. I taped them to a huge baking sheet. We give each child a plate, napkin and water bottle. We encourage them to try eating each plague, but do not force anyone to eat anything.I forgot to take a photo of plague one... the Nile turning to blood. For this plague, we bought sardines in tomato sauce. The tomato sauce looks like bloody water and the sardine represents all the dead fish. Surprisingly, half of our kids tried them and liked them!
Here is plague two... gummy frogs! We searched high and low to find these fellows and had to go to a Spec's to get them...
Here are our gnats... they are really mustard seeds!
Here are our flies... chocolate chips!
Plague five... all the livestock died. To make them, we used half a hot dog weiner and stuck 4 pretzel sticks in each weiner.
Boils!!! This one is a little gross... a Ritz cracker, with a dollop of Cheez Whiz and a pepperoni on top! The odd looking one is a wadded up Fruit Roll-up to accomodate a child with a food allergy.
Plague 7... lightning and hail. For the HOT lightning, we ate Hot Tamale candies...
and the hail is ice cubes.
Plague 8 was weird to make! hahaha These are rice krispie treats that I made. Once the marshmallows were melted and just before I added the cereal, I added a few drops of black food coloring and stirred it in well. Then I added the cereal and pressed it into the pan like normal. I tried to cut them into skinny strips. It would have been cute to add black licorice legs... but it just did not happen this time.
Plague nine... total darkness! This year we used an Oreo cookie for the base. Then I put 2 small dollops of icing on top of the cookie and added candy eyes. I bought the candy eyes at Hobby Lobby in the cake decorating section. Some years we have also baked a batch of brownies and used white chocolate chips for the eyes.
The last plague... death of the first born. The plate below was what we gave to each child... french fries in the shape of a doorpost and a dollop of ketchup at the bottom.
As we talked about the plague, the kids used one fry to "paint" the doorpost to keep away the angel of death.
This was a HUGE learning experience for our kids! They had a LOT of fun and learned even more!
1st Grade - October - Hide the Word - 1 John 3:11 - photo sequence
"This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another." 1 John 3:11
This is our mail-out game for October. The first year we trimmed the photos and mounted them on card stock (see sample above). However, all the other years we have simply printed the photos and the kids love it just as much! This game does take a little bit of planning. About 3 weeks before the new month, bring your verse phrase cards and camera to class. On the back write the name of the child who will hold each card. Some years we even take a photo of Daesha and I holding a card! :)
The verse phrase cards are 8.5x11 sheets of paper with the verse phrases printed in a really large font. Have the kids hold the verse phrase card in front of their belly and take their photo!
Mail each child a complete set of everyone holding a verse phrase card. Then they will put these photos in order.
1st Grade - Hide the Word - November - Matthew 5:44 - Clothespin Game
"But I say unto you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." Matthew 5:44
Then the kids sequence the clothespins to make the whole verse. They can clip them onto a ruler, a wooden spoon, the edge of a folder or book.
1st Grade - March - Hide the Word - James 4:7-8 - Magnetic sequence
"Submit yourself to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." James 4:7-8
This is a great activity that can be used for practically any verse in the Bible! It can be a mail-out game or in-class game. There are two options of how to prepare this game...Option 1 - Print words off computer onto cardstock to fit into punched shape size. Then laminate cardstock with the phrases of the verse written on it. Last, use punch to cut the shapes out of the cardstock.
Option 2 - Laminate blank cardstock then punch out the desired shapes. Write the words on top of the laminated punched shape with a Sharpie. This can be done with a variety of shapes. The hand-held punches seem to work best.
For both, attach magnets to the back. Have the kids put in order on a magnetic surface such as, file cabinet, cookie sheet, muffin tin, etc.
1st Grade - November - Hide the Word - Matthew 5:44 - Wreath
"But I say unto you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.: Matthew 5:44
This is a great in-class activity to have an application lesson for this verse. Before class, the teacher cuts out the wreath from cheap paper plates. Also tape the yarn for the hanger. Die-cut enough hearts (or other shape) so that each child’s wreath is full. (For Ellison die-cut, each child gets 5 hearts.) Write the words for the verse on one heart for each child.
In class, discuss verse and how as kids you can love your enemies. Record their responses on a chart. On the other 4 hearts, kids write their responses. Glue all the hearts onto the wreath.
1st Grade - February - Hide the Word - 1 John 3:1 - Headband
"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God."
1 John 3:1
Before class, make a cut-up sentence of the verse. To make a cut-up sentence, either hand-write or print the verse off your computer. Cut the verse into 2 word chunks. Place one verse set in a baggie for each child. Also, gather one sentence strip for each child. Also make the antennae! To make the antennae, gather two pipe cleaners for each child. Also cut-out 4 hearts for each child. Tape the end of one pipe cleaner to one heart. Then glue another heart on top of the pipe cleaner that is taped to the heart.
In class, give the kids their baggie of the cut-up verse. Have them glue the words in order on the sentence strip. A tip... fit and stapele the sentence strip to fit the child's head BEFORE sequencing the words. Draw a pencil line at the temples after stapling it. Have the kids glue the word cards inside the pencil lines... that way no words will be covered when the sentence strip is on their heads. Once all the words are glued on, the teacher tapes the antennae at the temples on the inside of the sentence strip.
Make sure to bring your camera to class! Take a photo of each child and a class photo to display on a bulletin board in the hall. Make sure to hang a verse poster with your photos!
1st Grade - March - Hide the Word - James 4:7-8 - Balsa Wood
"Submit yourself to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." James 4:7-8
These balsa wood shapes are a new obsession of mine! They come is all different shapes and sizes and are cheap! You can purchase them at Hobby Lobby. . Many shapes of wood are available, such as circles, hearts, stars, squares, peace signs and more.
Before class, buy the wooden shapes and gather fancy markers. In class, have the children write the verse on balsa wood. You will want to note, the markers will usually run or bleed a little, so make sure the verse is short or there’s a lot of room. You need to make a sample before class so the kids can see the spacing.
The sample above uses glitter markers that resemble paint pens. Before sending this home, you can affix magnets to the back or hot glue a ribbon loop at the top so the kids can hang their masterpiece!
1st Grade - April - Hide the Word -Proverbs 12:22 - Lego Stack-Up
"The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in men who are truthful." Proverbs 12:22
Depending on how many blocks you can collect will determine whether or not this is a mail-out game or a game that there is one set in your classroom. The kids build the tower and repeat the verse several times. As usual, sing the song and ask the kids what the verse means and examples of lying lips from the Bible and lips who were truthful from the Bible.
1st Grade - April - Hide the Word - Proverbs 12:22 - Lips on a Stick
“The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in men who are truthful.” Proverbs 12:22
This is an in-class activity. Before class, die-cut 2 lips for each child. Also gather 2 popsicle sticks for each child. Cut at least 6 little strips for each child. Tape the lips to the popsicle sticks.
In class, discuss the verse. Have the kids label one stick “lies” and the other stick “truth.” Brainstorm words we can say that are lies and record them on a chart. Then brainstorm words we can say that are truth and record on a chart.
Then have the kids go back to their seats. Distribute at least 6 strips to each child. On 3 strips have the kids write lying statements. On the other 3 strips, have the kids write truthful statements. Then they glue the strip onto the correct lips, as a speech bubble.
The photos below are examples and your students will come up with other fabulous examples too!!!
1st Grade- April - Hide the Word - Proverbs 12:22 - Pool Noodles
"The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in men who are truthful." Proverbs 12:22
Write the verse on the side of each slice using a regular Sharpie. Then the children sequence the slices. Make your tower no taller than 10 slices. You can also get a dowel rod to stablize the tower.

First Grade - Hide the Word - May - Proverbs 12:18 - Roll the Blank Game
“Reckless words pierce like a sword but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Proverbs 12:18
This is a GREAT in-class game that can be used for any verse from grade 1-5! Talk about versatility!!! It is also super cheap and easy to make.
Before class, make the game board. You have a few options… you can print it out on white paper and have the kids write with a pencil on the paper. Or you can laminate them and then let the kids write with a dry erase marker so that you can use them from year to year. They could also be slipped into a plastic sleeve like you would use in a binder. The you keep the cube and marker all in the same sleeve.
Purchase the wooden cubes at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. For the first grade version, I used 1 inch cubes. If the verse is longer, then you may consider larger cubes. Write a verse phrase on each side of a wooden cube.
To play the game, the child rolls the wooden dice and writes the phrase he rolled in the appropriate blank on the worksheet. The child continues rolling until all the blanks are filled. If he rolls a blank he has already filled in, then roll again.

Kindergarten - Hide the Word - December - Verse Poster - Psalm 145:13b
Before class, print out a verse poster for each child. In class, give them markers to trace the words of the verse. As they trace the words, sing the verse too. You can use any kind of fun marker… glitter, metallic, gel pens, etc. to add to the fun!
Kindergarten - November - Hide the Word - Verse Poster - Proverbs
This is an in-class activity… for brave teachers who love glitter!!! Before class, print a verse poster for each child. In class, have them trace the key words “hot-tempered” with glue bottles and then add red glitter. Repeat with blue glitter on “patient.” As you do this activity start a discussion about examples from the Bible of hot-tempered people and what happened. Also discuss patient men and how their actions helped calm situations.
Kindergarten - November - Hide the Word - Proverbs - Verse Poster
This was one of my boys favorite things from Kindergarten! The coloring book picture at the top is the mean chef from the movie Ratatouille. He is a GREAT example of a hot-tempered man!!! Before class, copy each child a verse poster. In class, have the kids color the hot-tempered man as you go over the verse. You can find the image by searching "Ratatouille coloring pages."
2nd Grade - May - Hide the Word - Ephesians - Bookmark
“Therefore put on the full armor of God so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand you ground and after you have done everything, you will stand.” Ephesians 6:13
This is an in-class activity. We made these at our VBS this summer, so we used a different verse, but the activity is the same. Before class, cut strips of card stock to be the bookmark. Punch holes and cut the ribbon. Print out the verse on paper. Go buy the armor of God stickers. These are Carson-Dellosa and were purchased at our local teacher store.
In class, have the kids glue on the verse card OR you can have the kids write the verse. Then let the kids stick on the armor piece stickers. They may also pick their color of ribbon and tie it on.
2nd Grade - March - Hide the Word - James 1:22 - Headband
"Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." James 1:22
This is a "must-do" in class activity!!! ALL kids love headbands and with these huge ears, they are SUPER cute! Before class, gather one sentence strip for each child. Also cut one set of ears for each child. Also make a sample, so that the kids can see the spacing of the words.
In class, give each child a left ear. Have them write the word on the ear. For the sample, I used a blue marker, but you can use any medium you choose. Then give each child a right ear and have them write the words on that ear. Next measure the sentence strip and staple it the the size of each head. Staple the ears over the temple spot on each side.Look at that face! Proof that this is AWESOME!!! Bring your camera to class and take a photo of each child wearing their ears. Also take a class photo. Hang the photos in the hallway with a verse poster for the entire congregation to enjoy!
2nd Grade - January - Hide the Word - Lips on a Stick - Ephesians
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.” Ephesians 4:29
This is an in-class game or mail-out game. To prepare, die-cut each child 6 lips. For this sample, we used an Ellison die-cut and pink cardstock. We also used tongue depressors. Write a verse phrase on each lip die-cut. Tape the stick on the back of each lip die-cut.
Then the kids sequence the lips in order to make the whole verse. They can also set all the lips in front and pick up the lip as they say the verse, holding it in front of their mouth as they say the words.

2nd Grade - November - Hide the Word - Spin a Verse - 1 Timothy
“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12
This is a spin-a-verse in class activity. Before class get 2 paper plates for each child. Cut out a wedge from one plate. Then use a brad to fix the plates together. Also cut out a set of word cards for each child. The words are speech, conduct, love, faith, purity.
In class, give each child a set of plates. They write the whole verse on the top plate. If time permits, they can also add various doo-dahs to the top plate. Next, they glue one word card in the open wedge area. Then spin the top plate to show the next opening wedge. Glue in another word card. Continue spinning and gluing until all the word cards are glued in.
After the word cards are glued in, let the discussion begin! You can use this for a few different teaching approaches… For one idea, have the kids get with a partner. Each child “spins” to a word. Then they tell their partner an example of how a Christian child can show that behavior. For example, if they spin “speech” they may say that they can show an example of speech by using kind words when sometime is unkind to them.
For another approach, have the kids illustrate each behavior within the open wedge on the bottom plate.
For another approach, give each child a sheet of blank paper. Have them fold the paper into 6ths. Write one behavior in each box. Then have the kids spin a behavior. In the box that corresponds with the spun behavior, write an example of a person from the Bible who exhibits that behavior.
Happy spinning… and learning God’s Word!
2nd Grade - August - Hide the Word - Ephesians 4:12 - Puzzle
“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” Ephesians 4:16
This can be an in-class activity or a mail-out game. To make this puzzle, die-cut 2 paper dolls for each child. Glue one die-cut onto a colored rectangle piece of construction paper. Write the verse reference at the bottom on the mat.
For the puzzle pieces, use the other die-cut paper doll. Write the verse on the paper doll with a Sharpie. Cut that paper doll into random puzzle pieces.
2nd Grade - November - Hide the Word - 1 Timothy 4:12 - Sunglasses
"Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12
You can either make these for the kids or have them as a give-away gift from you. If the kids make them, make sure to have a sample so they can see the spacing. All you need is one pair of sunglasses and a Sharpie marker for each child.Kids love unique real objects and they make a priceless connection for their learning! For this sample, I used sunglasses from Oriental Trader. However, I wish they did not have the spots on them! It makes the words a little hard to read. I would look in the summer at Dollar Tree or other bargain shops for plain sunglasses.
Take a class photo with everyone wearing their sunglasses to hang in the hall with a verse poster. You could also take a photo of each child to display!
