1st grade - Hide the Word - August - Proverbs 16:18

• “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

This is a fun activity!  This is a mail-out game for first grade, but it can also be an in-class activity.  This top photo shows the master for the flags.  Divide your verse into verse phrases.  Create a table on your computer so that all the boxes are the same size.  Copy onto card stock. 

  Cut the boxes apart and tape them to a cut straw to create flags.  When cutting the straws, I was able to get 4 flags from one straw.  At our local grocery store that had a bag of 100 brightly colored straws for $2... we may never buy straws again! :)  I used scotch tape to affix the box to the straw.

To do this activity, you will need a tub of beans or rice.  The tub that we use is a sensory tub that I used with my boys when they were in pre-school.  It has white lima beans, black beans and heart confetti.  You can use any combination of dry beans and rice.  Make sure there is enough beans to be 2 inches deep in the container.  The container we used is an old tupperware pie holder.  It was a container I had and was not using.  Any air-tight container that is medium to large sized is fine to use.

In class (or at home), the teacher puts the flags into the bean tub in random order.  The kids then sequence the verse.  You can also just give the child the flags and have them put in the correct order from the beginning.

Make sure you sing and say the verse each time you build it!

5th Grade - Hide the Word - February - "Roll the Blank" dice game - Romans 15:1-2

“We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up.  Romans 15:1-2 

This is an in class game and is SUPER fun!!! To make, copy the game board, which is simply six blanks and a verse reference.  This is another game that can be used for virtually any verse in the Bible.   You can copy on card stock and laminate or simply copy of plain paper. If it is laminated, then the kids can use dry erase markers to write on the game board and then play over and over.  If you copy it on plain paper, the kids would take it home that day.  

Before class, divide the verse into 6 phrases.  Write one phrase on each face of the the cube.  We used 1 inch cubes that were purchased in a value pack bag at Hobby Lobby.  You may want to consider 1.5 inch cubes if you have big handwriting.  You will also need to sue the ultra fine Sharpie marker. 

In class, the kids roll the dice.  Then they write the rolled phrase on the corresponding blank on the game board.  They keep rolling the dice and filling in the blanks until the verse is complete.  If they roll a verse phrase they already filled in, roll again.  

This is what I call "sneaky learning."  The kids say the verse no less than 10 times while doing this game.  That kind of repetition makes it "stick" in your brain and writes it on your heart!

5th Grade - May - Hide the Word - 1 Corinthians 15:57-58

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” 1 Corinthians 15:58-59 

Bring to class: baby wipes, paint, sponge brush, one piece of card stock per child.  In class, have each child sit in a chair while you sit on the floor.  Have them take off sock and shoe and show you on the paper where they want their footprint.  Teacher paints bottom of foot with a foam brush.  Then firmly place foot on the floor, making sure to press on each toe.  Carefully lift foot and wipe off with baby wipe. Then give the child another baby wipe to get in all the nooks and crannies of their foot to get all the paint.  Have a worksheet or other quiet activity for rest of class to while painting the feet.  The paint dries very quickly.  

As for writing the verse, for this sample, we wrote the verse beside the footprint.  You can also write the verse around the foot, in the shape of the foot.  Once the paint has dried, use a pencil to lightly trace around the foot.  Then write the verse on the pencil lines.  Make sure to have a good eraser and a sample.  It is tricky to figure out the spacing of the words.  Erase the pencil line before sending home.  

You could also do the footprint in the middle of the card stock and have the kids write the verse in a Sharpie OVER the footprint, like words in a book.

Depending on the amount of time you have to do this, it may take two class sessions to complete.  Once it is complete, put it in a Dollar Tree frame.  It will hang in that house for years and years and remind the whole family of God's Word!

5th Grade - Hide the Word - Romans 14:19 - Balsa Wood

We love things that can be used for virtually every verse in the Bible.  Annnnd, we love things that are cheap!  This summer, I discovered this product at Hobby Lobby.  They are also sold at Michael's and at both places are under $1 per shape.   Balsa wood shapes that we have seen are circles, squares, rectangles, hearts, cross, oval, star, peace sign, scallop edge circle and square.

In class, let the kids write the verse with colored sharpies or glitter markers.  The markers bleed, so encourage kids not to press too hard.  When using the balsa wood, choose a shorter verse. You can also glue a ribbon loop on the back so they can hang it at their house.  This sample is a 6 inch circle.  When making an image under the verse, like a watermark, make sure to use a light color of ink for the watermark image and darker ink for the words.  Make sure you have a sample so that the kids can see the spacing.  

5th grade - Hide the Word - October - Romans 12:3

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Romans 12:3 

This is another of our new loves... canvas!!  There are two kinds of canvases that you can buy.  At Michael’s they sell flat canvas boards in various sizes, like this, in a value pack.  There are normally 5 8x10 canvases for $7, but with a coupon, it was $4.50.  You can also get various sizes of wood-mounted canvases.  They come 2 for $5 before your coupon for the 4x4 size.  We have found that the flat canvas is better for kids to write on.  With the wood-mounted canvas, the canvas "gives" with the pressure of the pen and it is hard to write on.  Plus, the flat canvases are much cheaper! :)

The October example is to make a snaked verse.  Since the key concept of the verse is humility, we wrote “HUMILITY” big down the middle and made the verse fit around the key word letters in a snaking fashion.  This is the April verse.  It is simply written on the canvas with colored sharpies.   

 As with any project, the kids will like it even more if the medium is special... gel pens, Sharpies, glitter markers, metallic pens.

You can hot glue ribbon to back to make a hanger, by gluing one end of the ribbon to each top corner and tying a bow in the middle. These can also be displayed on an easel.  You can also paint with acrylic paint or stamp with stamp pads.  

3rd Grade - Hide the Word - March - James 1:5

James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Kindergarten - Hide the Word - January - Proverbs

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

 

 

For one of the projects for this verse, we have the children do a "verse poster." With a verse poster, you can do any number of projects. At various ages, we have children outline or circle key words, decorate key words with glitter or real objects (see pics below), or decorate the edges of the verse poster. There are so many things to do with a verse poster!! We will keep posting pictures of verse posters and things to do with them, so click on the "verse poster" label below for more ideas!

 

This specific verse had two key parts we wanted to drive home, gentle and harsh. We decided to attach real objects to the verse poster for this verse. We used sand paper for the "harsh" and cotton balls for "gentle."

 

In my experience, it was easiest to glue the cotton balls on after the cotton balls had been pulled apart, then gently re-rolled into loose cotton strips. i also began the project tearing sand paper, but found that cutting it with sciscors made the word more readable. The outcome may be different for finer grit sand paper. Elmer's bottle glue was very helpful.

 

 

 

 

Proverbs 15:1 verse poster

 

Second Grade - 2 Thessalonians 3:3 - December - Hide The Word

But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.
2 Thessalonians 3:3

This verse is the December verse for 2nd grade. One of the possible activities is a perforation.

To do a perforation, start with a fill in the blank worksheet, and a second worksheet with the words that belong in the blanks.

Cut the words for the blanks out.

 

 

 Mount the words on black (or any other color) construction paper with tape.

 

Take the paper to a carpet. Using a push pin, punch the pin through the paper layers, outlining each letter.

 

Remove the top white paper from the black construction paper.

 

Tape the colored construction paper onto the fill in the blank worksheet. (If you use glue, it will ooze through). You can see the white paper shining through the holes of the construction paper.

 

You can do this perforation with any verse or Bible class activity.

Hide the Word- CD Labels

Hide the Word in Your Heart - Labels for the CDs

For each age level, we have created a CD of the memory verse songs. This has been very helpful for the teachers, parents, and students to learn songs to help write God's word in their hearts.

Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to post .wmv files to Blogger. If you're interested in hearing the songs, please comment on this post and we will get back with you.

Annually, we burn the songs for each age level onto a CD. Every child in the congregation receives the appropriate CD. In addition, every teacher receives the same CD so she can learn the songs along with the children. We burn these CDs at home, write the grade level on each CD, and pop the CD into a paper CD holder.

For the CD holder, we needed a song label that would list what song verses were on the CD in what order. We came up with Avery label 48863, a 2"x4" shipping label. You use Avery Template 5163 to create these. We simply print the attached PDFs onto the shipping labels, and stick the labels onto a paper CD holder.

We distribute these CDs to the children their first Sunday in the new grade level, which for us is in June. We usually make a few extras for students that may move in during the school year.
